Culture as a driver of equality, with Xavier Marcé
In this episode of ODS5, the women’s talent podcast by Zona Franca Barcelona, we talk with Xavier Marcé, Councillor for Culture and Creative Industries at the Barcelona City Council. With extensive experience in cultural management, Xavier offers his perspective on gender equality in the cultural and creative sector, reflecting on the achievements and the challenges that still remain in this field.
During the conversation, Xavier highlights the gap between formal advances in legislation and everyday reality, where sexist attitudes and a deeply rooted patriarchal culture persist. He shares his views on the role of women in creative careers, where there is a growing female presence, in contrast with the male dominance in technical professions. He also addresses the initiatives implemented by the Barcelona City Council to promote gender equality, emphasizing the importance of these measures being requirements rather than mere options.
Additionally, Marcé reflects on the meaning of gender quotas and their role in building a more equitable work environment. In a more personal moment, he shares the women who have been role models in his life and offers a valuable piece of advice for the younger generations: to focus on content and what lies behind language, rather than on formalities.
This episode is a call to action to continue working toward equality and to recognize that, although progress has been made, the fight for gender equity continues.
