The challenge of gender equality: the vision from the courts of justice, with Judge Sonia Gutiérrez

In this episode of ODS5, the Zona Franca Barcelona podcast dedicated to female talent and gender equality, magistrate Sonia Gutiérrez shares her professional and personal experience in the judicial field. Gutiérrez highlights the strong presence of women in the judiciary in Spain, where they currently represent the majority. However, she stresses that formal equality in this field is not reflected in all areas of society, especially in issues of gender-based violence. As one of the first female judges to specialise in this area, she points out that, despite the 2004 Gender Violence Law, sexist attitudes persist, especially among young people, indicating the urgent need for more education and awareness-raising.

Gutiérrez also reflects on work-life balance, recalling the initial difficulties and the positive change that technology has brought with teleworking and online training. Finally, he calls for more resources for justice in Spain, given that the lack of judges is slowing down judicial processes.
