Gender equality in higher education: The voice of Àngels Fitó, rector of the UOC
In this episode of ODS5, Zona Franca Barcelona’s podcast on female talent, we are delighted to welcome Àngels Fitó, Vice-Chancellor of the Open University of Catalonia (UOC). Àngels, a staunch advocate of gender equality, shares her views on the inclusion of women in science and technology, as well as her experience in academic leadership.
Throughout the conversation, Àngels Fitó reflects on the gender gap in universities and the lack of female representation in management positions. Despite the progress made over the last 40 years, the reality is that only 25% of university rectors in Spain are women, which highlights the need to continue working towards equality. In addition, our guest highlights the importance of making women in science and technology more visible and presents her book ‘Mujeres de Ciencia, Tecnología y Pensamiento’ (Women in Science, Technology and Thought), which pays tribute to 22 women who have been leaders in their fields.
The rector also addresses the role of online education as a key tool for reducing gender gaps in access to higher education, and how diversity in work teams can improve results in multiple areas. With an optimistic outlook, Àngels Fitó encourages women and girls to follow their dreams and not be limited by external expectations.
