Women in cinema: Challenges and changes towards equality, with Judith Colell
In this episode of ODS5, the women’s talent podcast by Zona Franca Barcelona, we have the honour of speaking with Judith Colell, an acclaimed Catalan director, screenwriter and academic, and the current president of the Catalan Film Academy. Judith shares her journey in cinema and her strong commitment to gender equality, reflecting on the role of women in film direction and the challenges that still persist in the industry.
During the conversation, Judith highlights the progress made in female representation in cinema, though she emphasises that true parity has yet to be achieved. Despite the increasing number of female directors, the fight for equality continues, especially in a sector where the glass ceiling remains a reality. Judith also discusses the importance of having female role models and how cinema can be a driver of social change and awareness.
In addition, we share her perspective on ageism in the industry and the need to create a more inclusive environment for all generations of women. Judith encourages young women to pursue their dreams in the audiovisual field, reminding them that they have the power and the tools to do so. This episode is a powerful reminder that the fight for equality is a collective effort, and that every step counts towards a more equitable future.
