Women’s inequality in the transport sector, with Marta Elia Serrano

In this chapter of SDG 5, Marta Elia Serrano Balbuena, Secretary General of Land Transport of the Government of Spain, delves into the challenges of gender equality in the field of transport. Marta discusses how, despite appearances of legal equality, real equality has not yet been achieved, especially in highly masculinised sectors such as transport. She recounts her daily work experience and the long days spent managing state transport, highlighting the complexity and satisfaction of her work. She also discusses the “Women on the Move” project, focused on increasing the female presence in transport and mobility, and how her career was influenced by her passion for spatial planning and public transport. In addition, she emphasises the need to consider the specific needs of women in transport planning.
